What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is also known as tooth bonding. It involves using a softened composite resin to fix cracks or minor chips in the teeth. The material is pliable, so the dentist can mold it into any shape. It can also be polished to provide a more natural-looking appearance. After this, the dentist can use ultraviolet light to set the bonding in place. This will make the bonding harder.

What is dental bonding used for?

In cosmetic dentistry, this procedure is used to repair chips in the teeth. It can also help to fix spacing issues. If there is a gap in the teeth, dental bonding can close the gap with ease. It can also help to fix other minor orthodontic issues. That way, the patient will not need to get braces or other treatments.

The procedure is completely painless. In fact, in nearly every case, anesthesia is not needed. The patient will be able to resume normal daily activities. Patients can benefit from this procedure because it can cost less than other cosmetic procedures.

Can bonding cover the whole tooth?

Dental bonding is not the same thing as veneers. Veneers can be very strong and look good. But, this treatment is designed to cover the entire tooth. On the other hand, dental bonding is designed for smaller areas.

Composite resin, which is used in bonding, will not be as thin as porcelain veneers are. This means that trying to cover the entire tooth with bonding, a lot would need to be removed. That would reduce the size of the tooth by around half. If the bonding came off, there would only be stubs of teeth left. This is why a dentist will only recommend bonding for covering up small areas.

Making it last

Composite bonding does not last as long as veneers can. However, the patient should be able to have it for around a decade at least. This means that the patient needs to take good care of the teeth. It is important to avoid eating hard candy or ice. This can crack the material. The resin is not as strong as the natural enamel, so grinding the teeth can ruin the bonding.

It is a good idea to avoid opening packages using the teeth or biting the nails. Patients should also avoid staining foods and beverages for the first couple of days after a procedure. Patients should brush their teeth regularly so that stains do not have a chance to set. Having cleanings twice a year is also important.
